Dye Dresses

So without additional ado, right here’s how my very own wedding gown went from “i really do” to “party on” in six simple steps:

Action 1- buy two containers of fluid RIT dye in black colored (I'd intentions of taking my gown from white to black). Doubling the content of dye helps a really light product of clothing turn darker when you look at the dyeing procedure.

Step 2- Fill the sink with enough HOT AS YOU'RE ABLE TO OBTAIN IT water when it comes to garment to go around freely. Then add two bottles of RIT liquid dye (without including the apparel as of this time) and stir water and dye mixture carefully.

Step 3- observe that the label of my gown says “dry clean just” and that the bottle of RIT demonstrably states “not for usage on dry clean only fabrics”. Think of how I’ll probably never ever wear my gown again if it continues to be white and how we labeled as countless local dress dyers (every person switched me straight down saying it was “too risky”). Then think about how amazing it might be if this really worked. Say a small prayer (or five) and wet the gown with heated water before throwing it to the dye filled sink.

Action 4- freak-out some but press on. Stir constantly (up and down, back and forth) for 25 mins (you desire water to-be piping hot when you begin since it is most effective if the textile continues to be in heated water so the hotter it's to start, the longer you can easily stir the garment within the dye shower plus the longer it will probably take in shade).

Step 5- eliminate item after 25 mins of comprehensive stirring and rinse with warm water that slowly gets colder and colder (to seal in the shade). Keep rinsing in ice cold liquid before the water operates obvious. Then hang liven up to air dry (we hung mine in sunroom with bucket underneath to catch any errant drips) after saying a few more prayers.

Step 6- Thoroughly clean sink to remove all traces of dye (this was actually much more stressful than dyeing the gown as dye got everywhere and I also had been nervous about our stainless sink and our granite countertops but they all arrived clean with a few good ol’ soapy scrubbing).

Certain my gown finished up a fairly gunmetal-pewter color due to the metallic threads that went through satin, rather than black as I initially in the pipeline. Here it is from straight back:

And certain as my gown dried into the sunroom it looked completely ruined (rather than at all consistent in color). But when it absolutely was dry, along with had been closed in (no black dye bleeding into my epidermis when I stressed) as well as $12 of dye I turned my once-in-a-lifetime gown into a cocktail dress that i could use repeatedly (and believe me, I’ll use it providing I can squeeze involved with it!).

We realize this entire procedure could equally quickly concluded in catastrophe, and so I imagine the concept will be just dye something that you might never put on once again and remember to blend stir stir and employ hot hot heated water.
